GD25Q as a W25Q Replacement: SPI NOR Flash Second-Source Guide
When Winbond W25Q is short or you want to diversify supply, GigaDevice's GD25Q is a common pin-compatible second source. This guide covers JEDEC pinout and command compatibility, the QE bit, migration tips, and density mapping.
Why a second source for SPI NOR Flash
SPI NOR Flash is on almost every board — storing boot code, configuration, or fonts. Winbond's W25Q family is one of the most common choices, so a shortage or price hike can stall an entire product line.
A second source spreads that risk. GigaDevice's GD25Q family is designed to be pinout- and command-compatible with the W25Q, making it one of the most widely adopted alternatives.
GD25Q and W25Q compatibility
The GD25Q uses the standard JEDEC SPI NOR interface: the same SOP8/WSON8 pinout, the same standard command set (read, page program, sector/block erase, status registers), with SFDP and Dual/Quad I/O support. For most firmware, no driver change is needed after the swap.
For Quad (QSPI) mode, watch the QE (Quad Enable) bit location and how it is set; the GD25Q and W25Q usually match, but still compare the status-register definitions in both datasheets.
Details to verify when switching
Although most cases are a direct swap, before mass production confirm: supply voltage (1.8V and 3.3V parts are not interchangeable); page/sector/block sizes (standard 256B page, 4KB sector); timing and maximum clock; and whether your firmware reads SFDP.
If your host uses a hardware QSPI controller (e.g. STM32 QUADSPI, ESP32), validate read/write/erase on real hardware so the timing and dummy-cycle settings match.
Density mapping and sourcing
GD25Q densities map to W25Q by name — e.g. GD25Q64 ↔ W25Q64 (64Mbit / 8MB), GD25Q128 ↔ W25Q128 (128Mbit / 16MB), and so on.
